Project Jason: The Pain

Project Jason was about working out and no longer looking like a twig. In my last post I've discussed how I got a personal trainer named Eli because I noticed that I wasn't getting that much out of my workouts anymore. Or rather, I wasn't satisfied with the rate of progress.

Things were going good with Eli, I was satisfied with the intensity of the workouts. Back when I was working late overtime shifts I was still able to pop in late at night and get in a session before going home and Eli didn't mind, he was flexible. And since being laid off I've been trying to go every day. Might as well do something instead of sleep in all the time.

And then suddenly I get a text saying that he quit. Sound familiar?

This is an unpleasant trend.

BUT WAIT. He wasn't quitting being a personal trainer, he quit being a trainer at that gym. He was fed up with management there so he decided to become independent. I liked him as a trainer so eventually we met up and discussed how to continue our sessions. I'm actually paying half as much to just have him (as opposed to before) so I'm saving money. Plus, because we aren't at that gym anymore, we can go longer, be more flexible with times, etc. etc..

Everyone wins.

Well, I'm not entirely in the clear yet. Unfortunately, I purchased a set number of trainer sessions at the old gym. I now need to find a way to sell them off or be sneaky and exploit some loophole and talk my way out of them. Preferably the latter, put my Psychology degree to use right?

Wouldn't be the first time I've talked my way out of something.

Eli is also recommending protein drinks, specific foods to eat, and vitamins to take. And you know what, it can't hurt, especially if it'll supposedly make me bulk faster. The protein shake is a bit gross to be honest, or maybe this vanilla flavouring is just bad. I've been mixing hot chocolate in it to make it more palatable, shhh....

Actually I've noticed more visible progress in myself and I'm not the only one. My fast food job is the only place where I'm forced to wear a short-sleeved shirt and my coworkers claim my arms are larger. Well, my forearms are a bit, but not by that much.

Still, it's nice to see someone taking notice.

With that being said, the workouts have been hurting. One thing that Eli suggested to do to help the soreness is taking a bath in Epsom salts. I haven't taken a bath in years, and the tub in my bathroom is tiny, but I decided to give it a try after a particularly rough back workout session.

Feels good man. Even if it means half my body is sticking out of the water at any given time.

I still hate leg day though. Friday for whatever reason has been dedicated to leg day. And let me repeat, I hate leg day. I am still hobbling around from last Friday and it hurts to bend over to pick something up. If this is what it feels like to be old, I am not looking forward to it.

And my butt hurts. From working out. This is uncomfortable. It hurts to sit.


But hey, might as well do something with all this excessive spare time. Work-out, come home exhausted, and then fall asleep in front of my computer with a half drunk protein shake in my hand.

Is this how other people deal with unemployment? It's not bad.

  2. Glad to hear it's working out well for you buddy, just keep on going. Protein shakes really do help, there most definitely are benefits even when you don't really notice them working their magic. Keep at it buddy, especially if you don't have Marfans I can see you thickening out big time soon, fingers crossed on the Marfans bit, have you heard anything about that recently?

  3. Sounds better than sitting in front of a computer all day. And exercise is good for helping you remain positive so hopefully it will also make you confident in any job interview

Unfortunately it's not how I deal with unemployment but it's definitely along the lines of how I should.I think you should be able to talk your way out of those trainer sessions but you probably will have to sacrifice the money you paid for them if they're pre-paid. Grats on bulking up a little. Keep at it and become such a beefcake you can't fit in that tiny bath. Then consider you may have gone too far.

  8. Yes, yes, welcome to my world of unemployment. Work out hard, drink disgusting protein shakes (on what planet is this "chocolate?" Chocolate is supposed to taste good), and feel awkward sitting down because your ass is sore and you look like a 90 year old hemorrhoid sufferer to everyone else around you. And don't forget the awkward "baby with a full diaper" walk. That's fun, too.

    Totally worth it for the end result, though. Keep up with it.

  12. LOLOLOL the day-after butthurt is the worst.

    That's awesome it was cheaper to see him outside of the gym. Usually it's the other way around. I hope you can get out of the gym training sessions!

  13. Yeah trainers are transitional in gyms. Great that you got in touch and can still see him this way. I know you want quick results but it takes time. Be patient you are heading in the right direction if people are noticing a bit.

  14. Sometimes in-home personnel trainer are much better then the ones at the gym. Besides all of the pluses you mentioned, there is also less distractions coming from having many people around.

  15. I'm not sure most unemployed people can afford a personal trainer. But then, I don't know many people who use them so who knows?

    Your legs are probably the most important part to work out! I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, I probably have. They're what keep the rest of your body 'up'! Just sit through it, it's pain today but it'll make your future brighter.

  19. Yeah, my son was drinking that protein powder for a while...it looked pretty disgusting to me. Glad you're finally seeing some physical changes :)

  23. Sounds like good advice.
    As for the unemployment, I am with you on that. I think the best way to deal is to keep busy in-between job hunting. It can be really stressful to sit around and do nothing.

  24. I hate protein shakes ..yuck..hade to dirnk 2 a day to gain weight. Maybe try chocolate flavour, you could also put it in a smoothie or make cookies out of them ...it doesn't have to be drunk (is that right use) purely

  28. Good grief you are totally working out all your bits n pieces!! LOL!! Well done you for being totally focused on this - thanks too to Eli - he sounds like a totally committed trainer. I wish him well with his career away from the gym - their loss!! You take care now!

  29. I've been having bit of a hard time dealing with my body with nothing to do this entire december. My trainer is suggesting I switch to this protein shake too.
    Sounds like a familiar situation, though with people noticing changes, I've been wanting to get more better in shape even when it's taking the hell out of me.
