Where I'm at Now

Long time readers will know I started this blog way back in August because I had no idea what I was doing with myself or my degree. And to be honest, I still don't really have a clear idea of what I'm going to do.

Remember when I tried to get a job? Yeah, that didn't work out too well. So much for delaying things for another year to buy me more time to figure out what to do. So, clearly the smart thing to do would be to try and find another job right away at the first opportunity.

What?

Hear me out. See, there's a Psychology Internship program that my University offers that would be awesome if I could get in. For one year, you'd work with other psychologists, get valuable field experience AND get paid at the same time.

Plus it be a really good break after so many non-stop years of classes. Jobs range anywhere from research to medical to judicial. Each year the co-coordinator contacts a ton of interested organizations and then students contact them and arrange for interviews.

What could possibly go wrong?

Brilliant.

Well for starters, I'm a 4th year student, this is a program for 3rd year people. No problem, no problem, they make exceptions.

To people who have not exceeded the course credit limit.

I exceeded that limit last term.

BUT if you can make a compelling case they sometimes will even make an exception for people in this category as well. I talked to a few people and thanks to my multiple interview failures I am now "more experienced in interviews" and I've done more research so more "research experience" is also a good thing to tell them.

If only it were like this.

Sadly, I won't be able to know the department will make an exception for me or not until January. Also, if I decide to do the internship I can't graduate in April. Also, also, I need to start talking with other co-coordinators to figure out my Winter schedule to improve my chances.

If I can get this internship I have a chance at getting a job somewhere that I've always dreamed of. But no comment on that yet, don't want to jinx myself. Let's see if I can even get accepted for the internship program to start with.

  10. Seems like a slightly mad time for you! If it makes you feel better 60% of people I graduated with have no idea what they want to do now. Another 10% do but are struggling to make it happen. Me included. Hope it works out for you :)

  11. Good luck on getting the internship. There's nothing better to help you figure out what you want to do than experience like that.

  14. internships can be good or bad depends if the firm is looking for free work or people to hire

  15. It's tough out there. I think the internship sounds like a good idea. Plus it will give you real-life experience.

  16. I had a time when I cannot take any job because I was leaving in 3 months to other country to do an internship, and I just was applying for each job that I can just for improve myself in personal interviews. What happened at the end is I got a nice job but I had to reffuse due to this internship, but they said they'll save the spot for me when I return.

Just do stuff, you'll never know.

  17. Man, your education system is weird. I could take different classes how much i like. Only thing i need to do is apply for one.

  25. I'll keep my fingers well crossed for you young one; although I doubt that you'll really need my help.

When I was an undergrad back in the dark ages I contacted each prof in the psychology department. I was able to score a pretty sweet job as one of their assistants. The job was never posted anywhere. I just got lucky.

  26. Do try not to sweat this job searching thing too much. Do your resaerch for the right opportunity for you! Not because of what the school wants. The real world and school are to completely different things.

    Good luck!

  27. That sounds like a conundrum there sir. Best advice is that this is a journey, not a destination. Graduation is just an event on the journey, not some sort of epoch.

  32. Meh, the internship might be better than graduating tbh. the amount of people I know that got jobs off their internships, without graduating, is a lot more than you'd think. Good luck though!

  33. Love the second pic. It's funny!

  36. Oh how I've longed for a quantified experience system in life, and the ability to go through months of hard work in a two minute montage set to my favorite music.

  45. ugh. It's the ole you can't get a job til you've got experience, but how do you get experience without a job runaround. That sux. But you're trying! That's worth something. I bet they'll let you in. Best of luck with it!

    Happy Thanksgiving~

  47. Good luck! Sounds like a great experience getting experience. Plus, there's the money aspect of it, as well.
    Win, win.

  48. Good luck! Internships are scary (says the girl who never had one). But it's definitely tough out there - everyone wants you to have experience but nobody wants to give you any.

A few years ago, I finally got hired by a total mysogynistic asshole and spent 11 months of my life in hell before I was thankfully fired for a perceived "betrayal" regarding a coworker who quit without giving notice. Luckily, that soul-raping experience gave me enough experience to get my current job, which is a million times better (though not without issues). Just keep at it!

  49. Ooh, good luck with that. I can never get exceptions made for me :P

  56. Good luck with that stuff, man. Thinking about career while still at uni is so important. I didn't do squat towards my career, just concentrated on getting a sweet grade. Now I work in something completely unrelated to my subject! Do not go down this path, dear sir.
