New Year, New Phone

I remember when I got my first phone 3 years ago. It was an LG Rumor, first generation. Even by the time I was getting it was bordering obsolete. But I didn't care, I was satisfied I'd finally be able to call and text people on a whim, due to the age of the phone I wouldn't have to pay any extra with a plan AND it had a physical keypad that slided out. Very important because I can't stand the touchscreen ones.

Fast forward a year and a half later and I'm wishing my plan would end already.

Even the keypad couldn't save it from its failings.

The problems were small but they continued to add up over time. First the battery had issues, the phone couldn't make up its mind on how charged it was. It would jump from full or 3 bars, to 1 bar, no bars, 2 bars, back to 3 and so on and so forth. The thing was that it loved pretending it had no energy even if I CHARGED IT THE NIGHT BEFORE. And it beeped every 5 seconds that it thought its battery was going to die.

And then the phone would suddenly shut down if you poked it every so slightly. Sometimes I would put the phone in my pocket, pull it out, and it would be dead. This resulted in a lot of missed calls and text messages. Other times I would slide the keypad out to type a text and the phone would go NOPE and shut down.

And of course the time the stupid phone almost cost me an interview.

Yes that is a phone going through a wall. Yes I wish that was my phone.

But fast forward to 2012. My plan has ended and that has allowed me to get something (hopefully) much better. I am the proud owner of a Samsung 551. It's an Android with touch screen capabilities AND a slide out keypad. Because I love being able to actually feel the keys when I press them.

I know it looks similar to the Rumor but I assure you it's not.

It's almost the same as the Samsung Gio except that the 551 has the keypad. So far I'm liking it. Still getting used to all the new functions and settings but I'm liking it so far. I haven't got any apps for it yet but I plan to soon.

Oh and before I forget. I have chosen my 4th resolution based on comments on my New Year's post. I'm actually combining D4's and Heddin's suggestions. So I'll be either reading a new book and/or finishing a game from my massive backlog of computer games per month.

And I eat too slowly so Mark's suggestion of eating flaming endangered animals becomes eating ash.

I'll see you guys Thursday.

  1. Man I absolutely love this phone, it's pretty damn awesome looking. I love slide keyboards like that. A touch phone without a keyboard isn't that good in my opinion. Here's hoping 2012 is a good one for you buddy.

  2. Congrats on the new phone! I have a blackberry, and I'd kill for an iphone. I'm terrible at touch screens right now, but I'm certain I'd adjust. Good look with the reading!

  4. Good for you for upgrading your phone. I'm still under the opinion that all phones now are made to be broken, meaning that they have a limited life span before they decide to crap out on you, causing you to violate your contract and go broke buying replacement phones.

    But that's just me.

Hope you've had a nice start to the New Year!

  5. Ah phones. I have a thing. It wasn't even capable of text, I still have it it just wont turn on anymore. But then the contract expired last summer..

And woop, book and or game sounds fun. Badass.

  8. Man, I'm still using a Sony Ericsson T230. Let me tell you, it's slow and really, really laggy.

However it's incredibly sturdy, considering my phone change policy is "whenever it breaks". It's not going to go anytime soon.

  15. I would be very impressed by your retro phone, were it not for the major problems you've had with it. I've had a Sony Erikson K750i for about 5 years now, before this smartphone fad caught on. It is brilliant.

  16. Amazing durability is always important but how well will it survive in outer space?!?

  17. I've heard good things about the phone and the Android software is always updating so can only hope that it works out well for you and that you aren't ready to throw it through a wall as well when this plan ends!

  18. Well I guess you can enjoy your winter and smash a phone..haha

  19. I am totally with you n the physical keyboard thing. I have a lg optimus v and I love it EXCEPT for the gott-dang touch screen keyboard. I am with virgin mobile, who I love, but their phone offerings are limited. And this one ha la free wifi hotspot app that I need. Anyway, congrats!

  20. Physical keyboard? Good, good. I'm no hater of touchscreen keyboards, but they sure are overrated. Getting feedback when typing is extremely important!

  21. Haha. I swear it doesn't matter how near your phone is to being obsolete they are meant to torment you. I gave in and got the iPhone 4 and it is driving me mad with lots of problems, which is annoying as nobody else with one seems to have them. If phones weren't so damn expensive out of contract I would definitely be hurling it through a wall....

Good luck with your New Years Resolution. The reading aspect is my favourite by far...but that's because I spent a lot of the festive season reading whilst my boyfriend playing COD.

  23. Well you can still eat ash, but I like the little shout out. I'm glad you got a good phone. I got a Blackberry for Christmas, and it was much better than my old phone. I also really love having an actual keyboard, which is why I don't really want an iPhone.

  24. Everytime I get a new phone, I end up not using it. It just remains in one corner of the room and then suddenly my brother or my sister is using it, and their reason? Because I'm not.

  25. Android FTW, I have an Xperia Arc!

  33. Hm, that is a decent resolution to follow. I too have an ever growing back log of games and books. Plus films and TV shows. Work ruins all this loafing time I could be having.

As for phones, mine is a relic. I really have fallen behind when it comes to tech.

  72. The older phone sounds like a cranky character, huh? Hope you enjoy the new phone... I'm still stuck with an old 3G phone which suddenly decides it can't read my sim card every now and then, but since I hate phones in general, I couldn't care less.
