I Really Need to Gain Some Weight

I think I've talked enough about how I'm really tall and ridiculously thin. I mean, one of my New Years resolutions was to bulk up. I'm literally a sack of skin with some bones in it. People will lean on me or Theresa will try and rest her head on my shoulder and I can tell it's not a comfortable experience.

I do not make a good pillow.

Probably a similar experience.

It really doesn't look that bad when you see me in person. But that's because I try and cover it up by wearing baggy pants and dress shirts. It's like a pufferfish blowing itself up to make it look bigger than it really is.

And it works too. I always win at those Guess Your Weight games. The clothes add 10-20 points to my frame. So I guess that's always an advantage.

And then someone comes over to give me a hug and the facade is gone. My shirt squishes down to my body and it reveals my true nature.

Not so big are you now?

This point was further driven in the other day when I needed to buy a new suit. I've had this suit since about Junior High so it's about time. People will generally have to buy new dresses and suits as they grow older. Usually because of an expanding waistline or something to that effect.

My old suit doesn't fit because I've lost so much weight.

The thing is ridiculously baggy when I put it on. The coat looks too big, I need a belt to hold the pants up, the original vest doesn't even fit me anymore, etc.. I'm not saying skinny guys can't look good in suits, but when it's not nice and tight, you look kind of silly. Like a clown almost.

What really honed the point in was when the salesperson measured my waist. It was kind of comical the way she said my waist was 28 inches.

That bolt is 28 inches.

So, I need to stop looking like an anorexic Korean boyband member. Keep trying to gain muscle. I can do nearly 40 consecutive push-ups now but I'm thinking it may be time for me to start going to a gym.

I wouldn't look forward to that though. I haven't been to a gym in ages and I don't enjoy working out in the presence of others. It just feels weird when everyone else is really bulky. Yeah, I'm a touch self-conscious.

Yeah, kind of intimidating.

Ah well, maybe it's not such a bad thing being a skinny guy. I do get abs by default.

Who am I kidding. Time to find a way to hit the gym again as soon as possible.

  1. You should definitely consider hitting the gym man, it can be a lot of fun, especially if you're going with buddies and it really will help put an end to your issues of not feeling like you're heavy enough. This time last year I was a dangerously ill eight stone eleven, or 121 pounds but currently I'm almost eleven stone or 154 pounds and I really do owe so much of that to the gym. Good luck in gaining weight anyway buddy, I know that feel of being just way too skinny.

  2. If there's tons of bulky guys in the gym, make the promise to yourself to train there until you can be intimidating to newcomers, too. Gives you something to move forward to other then just general bulking up.
...I don't go to the gym myself, but I can imagine it being sort of weird and/or awkward going there and training in the presence of others. Put that self-consciousness aside though, it's only holding you back!

  6. Well good luck getting over your self-consciousness. You can probably do it way before I get over mine. It's good you accept being underweight as a problem too, not many do. So good luck beefing up.

  7. You also probably need more protein to be able to bulk up.

  8. Hahah good luck. Use lots of protein powder!

  9. If you wanna gain weight fast pretend you're American and eat at a fast food resturant five times a day! (seven on weekends!)

  10. Some chicks really dig skinny guys mang! However, that doesn't stop me from trying to bulk up, or at least try and work-out more, just to feel like a healthier person.
For the most part you just have to consider your diet; eat more and try to exercise as appropriate. Exercising is just a case of doing something when you're bored and developing it into something you actively put time aside for; keep a schedule, work out at certain times and keep score.

  11. A lot of guys feel uncomfortable going to gyms, so maybe you are just naturally thin. As long as you eat healthy and get plenty of exercise...presuming your Doc has checked you out for any nasties lurking, you'll be fine.
Muscle is heavier than fat, but muscle turns to fat when it's not used.
A difficult one to answer here. Does thinness run in your family?
Get yourself checked out before you do anything. ;)

  12. working out is kinda hard for everyone. Muscles have weird other benefits (you just feel better in general)

  18. LOL wow a cement block pillow, that has to be fun. Hitting the gym is always a good thing even if you are naturally ripped.

  20. haha! cutiest post ever. but I have to agree, a thin man would never make a good pillow (for his woman) so, please do bulk up (if you really think you're thin) and please do share some photos too. hehe..

I so wanted to gain weight too but unfortunately I don't have any source of motivations. haha!

  21. Good luck, bub! You'll be needing a lot of those. I tell myself to do the same thing and bulk up for once but I always end up quitting half-way everytime.

  22. I seriously do too! I weigh like 140 and I'm 6'1"! I could eat an entire large pizza every day for a whole week and after getting off the toilet, weigh the same!

  23. I am a very soft pillow, will trade you some weight for your abs :-D ?

  24. Awww... do you really look like an anorexic Korean boyband member? That just makes me want to shove carbohydrates down your throat!!!! And also, it makes me want to give you a hug, but I'm too scared of being stabbed to death by your shoulder blades/ribs/whatever bones people hug with.

  25. Most Asians are skinny. Don't worry about it too much. Besides, you have a girlfriend! :)

  26. Dunno if they have something similar in Canada but Crossfit, P90X or any of those extreme workouts are supposed to be really good for bulking up.

Then again being skinny is a good problem.

  27. DWei, have you already tried weight gainers, I mean the serious stuff that gymnasts use?

    ReplyDelete
  28. P.S. Oh one more thing: if you want to gain weight it's better to do 6 extremely difficult reps than, say, 20 or so.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh young one if I could only share some with you of what I have we'd both be happier. And as far as going to the gym goes, I too am starting soon; so don't feel too alone.

And I don't like it either.
