Time for a new Laptop

I briefly mentioned it here but my laptop has been acting up. If you were wondering why I haven't been visiting your blogs that much this weekend, that's why.

Ok, time for another confession: It's not a real laptop. It's a Macbook. And I keep referring to it as a laptop because I'm kind of ashamed of using an Apple product.

I really dislike Apple.

Every single Apple product I own has been given to me by my parents. Like my iPod for when I graduated. My Macbook was a gift when my old laptop wasn't working so well. And I accepted because I didn't want to look like a spoiled brat for declining their generosity.

And I learned the hard way that you should always get the extended warranty with Apple products. A few months after the warranty expired, problems started happening.

Not quite, but close.

It started out when things got really laggy. I used to be able to run TF2 and Minecraft with minimal problems. Then suddenly I would have extreme lag when watching a Youtube video. It would hear the fan start up when I went onto Facebook. It didn't make sense. It usually never got this hot.

The next flag that suggested something was wrong was when the case started melting onto the Mac. I had a case for it and one day I took it off in hopes of helping the Mac cool down. And that's when I noticed the fried on splotches of plastic.

Needless to say I was concerned.

Don't want something like this to happen.

So I take it into the Mac store and get it checked out. The say it's going to be one of two problems, and they weren't going to be cheap because my warranty had expired. Maybe it was a fan problem which would cost $100 to fix. If not, it was a logic board problem, which would cost $500.

Either way, they needed to run some more in-depth tests to see what was wrong. They said they'd call when everything was figured out.

And I got that phonecall today. Turns out, I have a fan AND logic board problem.

It could be worse I guess.

So I've decided NOT to get the repairs done. Even though my fan is running at double the speed it's supposed to. Even though my logic board is derping harder than a Corgi. I think I'll just start looking into getting a new laptop. A real laptop this time.

Assuming I can find a job. I've sent more applications out but still no response. :(

  1. they are sold as the ultimate, but in reality they are built by derps, same as everything else these days. my " laptop " has to be plugged in all the while and a fan trained on it. 1st world problems eh ?

  2. Well, since you're not using it for actual work. Try install a Linux distribution. Perhaps that might "magically" fix something. If I remember correctly it uses less resources, though I could be completely wrong.

  3. I like the iPod but apart from that I stay away from Apple products too, I hear about the Mac being very volatile and unreliable but my computer's currently broken too so I can't really talk haha.

  4. Still no response from a job? That sucks man sorry to hear that. You know, I'm not the biggest Apple fan either but I have an Ipod that's like 5 years old and it's never broken down so I can't complain about them realistically. I've never bought an Apple computer though. One thing that sucks about your computer breaking is of course having to buy a new one but once you already buy it and you start it up, makes you feel like a new person, one of those lose/win situations.

  5. i guess Apple has always worked for me. so i would not complain.
my last laptop was a non-apple which gave me trouble from day one.

  6. I've heard people say, though I've never really seen enough proof, that Apple actually make things in such a way that they break after warranty and that's why you should always get the extended warranty. But my iPod has been chugging along nicely for 7 years now, and it was already second hand. So that defies the rumours. Good luck getting a new laptop though. Macbooks aren't bad really, they're just a tool of the devil.

  7. I dislike them too, sorry to hear about the laptop situation and still no job yet...I hope it gets sorted...soon!

  8. Now now now, Macbooks aren't any less of a laptop than anything else. The OS and manufacturer aren't your average one is all.
I have to hand it to you though, they have a bad rep for heating issues. Is it a 13-inch model? Those only got one tiny shitty fan, which more often than not isn't good enough, hence why it's going at max rpm even when you're not doing anything processor-heavy. This is also why putting a case around your Macbook is not the best idea ever, even if it has ventilation holes.
The lag, not too sure about that. Have you tried turning it off and on again?

But yeah, Apple products are overpriced. The only reason I'm getting a Macbook Pro later this year is because of the OS. My day-to-day workflow has been integrated with it and finely tuned. I'll definitely also be running Windows and/or Linux on it for the non-Mac OSX stuff I want to run.
As for laptop recommendations, the Samsung Chronos seems pretty good.

  9. Yikes...your case was melting? Sorry you need a new computer...

PS...you can put whatever you want into those quiches. Leave out the prosciutto and they'll be vegetarian. Just put in the veggies you enjoy.

  10. I'm with you, mine is being a pain in the rump as of late too, nothing to the tune of $500 bucks or more though, I think it's time we both skipped the printer and just smashed the laptops, err umm apple thingy..haha

  11. i'm with you on this. When you're buying any apple product, you're paying for the brand, not the quality.

  12. Sorry to hear about the laptop. I loathe when my computers cause me problems

  13. Oh my! That fried bits actually look terrible.

  14. Eeeek! I switched to a macbook about a year ago - no regrets. Sorry about all your problems! I still stand by apple, though...

  15. I have a macbook and I love it!!! I've had it for 2 years so far and no problems....well except for the time I spilled coffee all over it. But the warranty fixed it right up. Sucks that your warranty ran out. How long was it for?

  16. But I thought Apples never had problems? They're made of Unicorns and Rainbows and Steve Jobs' happy tears and run on sunshine so they never break like Windows computers!

Kidding aside, I hate when a computer takes a dirt nap. It always happens at the worst time, doesn't it? Here's hoping you find something reliable!

  17. I don't hate macs.. but.. playing games at all on a mac is funny. I'm sorry it ruined so hard.. yeah get yourself a PC. They're just.. so much cheaper.. and realistic.

To be fair though, with the recent design work I've been getting myself into, I've been wondering if I should mod my netbook into a mac. I think I'd rather mod it into a linux, though.

  18. Wow, this is a real surprise. You are the only person I've ever known who's had a Mac that wasn't happy-overly happy- kinda worrisome happy with it.

All I can tell you is STAY AWAY from a Toshiba. Run far and fast if anyone even tries to give you one.

  19. Ouch. I'm sorry to hear about your computer!

  20. apple are so expensive for laptop and phone

    ReplyDelete
  21. But aren't most laptops that way? Things mess up after the main warranty expires and if you didn't get the extended one you're out of luck. $600 for repairs is nuts though. For that much you can get a new laptop, though dunno if the specs would be better/similar.

  22. Yeah, I don't like Apple either. Never owned an Apple product in my life. But my PC is also starting to give me problems, and I'm also in need of a job... Looks like we're in the same boat, haha... ><

  23. Got an old laptop myself. No cash to replace, it is a bitch.

    ReplyDelete
  24. sucks about your crappy Apple products (ESP since I just got an iPhone myself =/ ) but uh, glad you're rejoining the PC/laptop universe.

  25. I think Apple is popular only in USA. I hate computer problems. always gives me creeps!

  26. Aw man. That sucks about your laptop.

Also, good luck with finding a job!

  27. Hello! I have never used the apple product...

    ReplyDelete
  28. Sorry about the "laptop". Hopefully you can get a new one soon. Good luck on the job search. Keep the faith, brother.

  29. Looking for a new laptop myself.

  30. Ouch. the double whammy.

There are good deals out there to be found. I say head to your local computer/electronic shop and check everything out and find the one you like. Then look online at reputable places for the best deal.

The job market is tough but getting better. They will call soon.

  31. Keep plugging away and something will turn up...

  32. Those pictures. . . XD
Yeah, sometimes repairs just aren't worth the money, better off just getting a new laptop. Good luck on the job hunt.

  33. Boo! I LOVE my MacBook, and I've never had any problems with it. *eyes laptop with suspicion*

    Yet...

  34. I'm not a big fan of Apple, either.

  35. I thought apple products were made of sterner stuff...

  36. When you buy a laptop make sure it has a built in gpu. Since google chrome and many browsers now have gpu acceleration and games use it its good to have. One of the cheapest laptops with a good gpu is the Acer Aspire AS7739G-6676

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oh nooo, I have an iMac, thankfully no problems as of yet! netbooks are supposed to be pretty good.
Hey keep trying jobwise! you never know what's around the corner!

    ReplyDelete
  38. why would you hate apple? haha! I'm not an apple fan either but the only reason I don't like the brand is because "it's too expensive"

but I would definitely won't say no if it's a gift. hehe..

    don't worry, someday you'll get a job :)

  39. And that is why I never buy Apple products.
