I've been through a lot, such as nearly being kicked out of my degree and the constant stressing out. And so:
What's the final verdict?
Come on...
Rejection.
Rejection because I was over the course limit by about 3 courses.
I tried to discuss this with the coordinator and from what I can understand the reasoning behind this is that if a student didn't like their internship by having enough courses they could still potentially adjust things in the future and change their degree.
I'll be honest, I don't care if I get the worst internship ever, I just want the experience and the money. I'm pretty sure most people are like that at this stage in life. But this didn't matter to her, decision is final, and that's that.
So where does that leave me?
Sigh...
Well right now I'm trying to find other internships and job opportunities within my city. See, the nice about the Internship Program that I was vying for was that there would be the contact information for several dozen employers just sitting there, waiting for me to contact, no searching for me to do. Everything is nicely labelled and organized.
Right now, I've found barely a handful of potential jobs. Not surprising that Psychology Internships are hard to find, that's why that program was created, to help students like me. I've sent a few emails and applications, not holding my breath but what else can I do? I've already been turned down again for a few of them.
At least they were quick about it.
I don't give up easily but I'm starting to reach my breaking point here. I have 1 term left until I graduate, no viable career opportunities, I had no intentions of entering Graduate school until I had something to bolster my chances but right now maybe I should consider writing the GRE and then hoping for a miracle.
But we know how many miracles I've been getting.
Yeah, if you can't tell, I'm still kind of disheartened. I was better but after I started looking for other jobs and internships I realized how sparse they were. And then I started feeling miserable again.
And then I became even more so when I realized almost everyone around me seems to be advancing their careers just fine.
Hey guys, can I join?
In one of my earlier posts, I voiced my concerns about my peers being successful while I lagged behind. And it has just becomes more apparent with each passing day. The Med students are adjusting just fine to their hectic schedules, people are getting interviews to whatever positions they applied for whether it be medicine or grad school or job interviews. Even my younger sister recently got a job working at a Veterinary clinic which is perfect for her because she's going to Vet school in 2 years.
And then you have me. The guy who got rejected from 10 different places (5 if you only count the interviews), couldn't get into a program designed for students like him and no foreseeable future options. Back in August I was hoping for some answers or reassurance by this point but now I'm even more unsure of the future than when I started this blog.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, I'm not sure how to proceed, and I feel like crawling into a corner and being depressing for the next 24 hours. And I'm sorry for being so depressing. I'll try and have something more positive for Friday.
Awwww, I'm sorry. I say, give yourself 24 hours to be really depressed. Eat ice cream and whatnot. Clear your mind, then figure our your next move. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure not doing anything will have positive results you should try that.... or not.
ReplyDeletePfff, hard hits you're taking here man. What can I say? Keep your head up, don't get too depressed (that'll just slow you down even more), and put sunglasses on when looking towards the sun (metaphor for looking towards your future).
ReplyDeleteAlso, if you're in really dire need of a job or something, get good at webdev and a bit of programming, become at least slightly tech-savvy, and I can net you a job. Give me a ring if you're ever going to take me up on this offer!
Nice post!
ReplyDeleteAw man, I really feel for you. But don't judge your success by comparing it to others. You're still young and have a long road ahead of you. When I finished college I was the most underqualified person out of all my friends, they were in courses or starting jobs that were a full tax bracket ahead of me and I thought myself to be the least successful. Now, only a few years later, I'm engaged to a beautiful woman, moving to the city of my dreams and at a higher pay grade than most of the rest of my friends.
ReplyDeleteYou determine your own successes and failures, and your successes won't mean half as much if you don't know the pain of failure first. Let yourself be depressed, and when the time is right, dust yourself off and go do what you have to do.
Don't worry about being depressed, life gets you down sometimes. I hope you can find something.
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you're saying
ReplyDeleteit's an unbelievable pain to get an internship for anything anywhere
and the college doesn't want to do anything to help and won't place you so you're stuck on your own
I remember my rage when I had that problem
if you can manage to avoid getting violent you'll get through it
Sometimes you just have to rant, shouldn't judge your life on everyone else's though. Let them advance or whatever it is they want to do and just worry about you. Hopefully something pops up.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the internship, man. Just keep trying though, I'm sure you'll find something eventually. Most of my friends are unemployed. Times are hard, especially for those of us with little experience...
ReplyDeleteAwww damnit man, I'm so annoyed you got rejected from this thing. Here's hoping you can get an internship sorted out in the near future buddy, just keep your head up man and keep on going, best of luck.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your internship! Don't give up though.
ReplyDeleteGood luck on the internship scouting
ReplyDeleteDon't try and have something positive, try and be positive. You're looking at things through a fixed views, the way things should be done, the way you're trying (and isn't working). Peek outside the box, take it easy on yourself and let your mind work itself out without the rules. It's hard to do sometimes, but try.
ReplyDeleteAlways believing in yourself. You can find the right one! Good luck my friend!
ReplyDeleteAhhh I know the felling its awful hopefully you get accepted into another intern and it all goes well!
ReplyDeleteJob situation is really bad out there. Hang in there, hopefully something will turn up. Meanwhile I would do some volunteer work. Are you on Linkedin ? they are pretty good. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteVolunteer work is a good idea
DeleteI'm sorry to hear you're going through such a rough time. It is a difficult job market, that is for sure. All I can say is that I've been through many ups and downs in my working life... there will be a brighter time, but we don't know when it will come. Hang in there.
ReplyDeleteOh, that is an awful feeling. I can't help with job leads and I can't tell you why you seem to be stalling when seemingly everyone else is moving forward. I can tell you that persevering is the only way to have a chance at moving ahead (of course). But, if you need to wallow for a day I think you'd be forgiven :)
ReplyDeleteKeeping my fingers crossed for you. I'm in my own situation with trying to find permanent employment, build my writing career, find a new place to live and just get ahead.
ReplyDeleteHey, so sorry about the internship and how you feel!
ReplyDeleteThings will start looking up from here I'm sure.
You've had your dose of struggle and now it's your turn to have things sort out the way you want.
Hope you find the energy to get back up and find that perfect opportunity that is out there looking for you.
Sorry you got rejected. Life can be stressful sometimes.
ReplyDeleteyou can't be half as bad as my brother. he's always depressed.
ReplyDeletethings will work out somehow :)
I'm sorry to hear this Dwei but keep plugging as you never can tell......
ReplyDeleteman that blows...something will turn up I'm sure
ReplyDeleteAww man that's crappy news.
ReplyDeleteDon't give up though!! Eventually you'll get an internship, just keep trying.
I know easier said then done, but it'll all fall in to place in the long run :)
You will find something perfect, this one obviously wasn't meant to be and neither were the other ones. Good luck to you!
ReplyDelete-Ryan (http://findonlinescams.blogspot.com)
I feel for ya, life never seems to be what we want it to be. Aparently stuff like that builds character so one day once you've succeeded you'll have more character then most but for now it looks like you'll have to struggle.
ReplyDeleteDon't give up though, you will make it!
That sucks. :/
ReplyDeleteOne day at a time!
ReplyDeleteWhoa! You just got slapped. Sorry about that. You worked so hard for it too. Still it's just happened so try not to get too down on yourself- just yet anyway.
ReplyDeleteplease stay postive, i've only had one slap in the face rejection and tht was with a university, but things can only get better? Maybe it's a blessing in disguise, I hope things look better for you soon :) I know the feeling of lagging behind :/
ReplyDeleteI hate it when I get rejected from things, but don't worry man things are going to look up. You're doing plenty on your part, someone's bound to cross your path with some useful info about a career.
ReplyDeleteAh well dude, you could always try elsewhere. Good luck!
ReplyDeletestay positive! something will work out
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry! Give yourself a day or so to mourn this loss...then with the determination you've shown again and again, go on the hunt again. I have faith that you'll find something.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to hear about this! Just remember everything happens for a reason! I am sure it sucks now but there is something good that will come out of this! You gotta walk through the rain before you can see the rainbow :)
ReplyDeletei know the feeling. hang in there. hope you are feeling better.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the internship. I know what you mean about everyone around you seeming to go places while you just of..... don't.
ReplyDeleteBut you know what field you want to work in, and that's not something that most people know early on. You're also really busting your arse to get into that field, so I think you'll make it. Keep persevering! Some of us will never have it easy, but we become better and stronger for it.
Better luck next time, chap.
ReplyDeleteoh! That's too bad :(
ReplyDeleteMake no mistake, it's a sucky time to be seeking any kind of career advancement. I know that doesn't help at all, but Grad School's not so bad.
ReplyDelete...of course, it's kind of just delaying the inevitable.
As Quai-Gon Jinn says: "I'm sure another solution will present itself."
sorry to know about it
ReplyDeletegood luck for next attempt
keep trying you will succeed
What an a** of an internship coordinator.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I would see if you can push for an exception at this point considering the situation. Explain the situation exactly as you did in this post.
If the internship coordinator still wont' budge, go over his head if you have to. Good luck man, hang in there!
I hope that you find an internship that you are happy with! Thant stinks that 3 credits gets you denied for something to better your education.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about the rejection. Sometimes the criteria for jobs/internships is too strict, especially when you just know there are jobs/internships being handed out so easily because they're friends/related with the person. Suddenly those same 3 courses don't mean a damn thing.
ReplyDeleteAh sorry you did not get it and are having problems. Take your 24hours of sadness but then get back to it with a smile (even if fake)
ReplyDeleteHope you really feel better dear, yesterday was a suck day to me, but Im better (lol)
ReplyDeleteI already thought going crazy, with nothing going well. Everybody else are doing fine and can't get your feelings.
ReplyDeleteI know it can be very hard time to go trough... keep your head up.
If I become rich in the next days, I'll send you some money or hire you to psycholog me on anything.
my post grad life hasn't been as rad as I hoped it would be (not just for business/professional/financial reasons either...although those do suck). Makes me consider going back for a Masters or something else. Either way, best of luck to you.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to hear you didn't get the internship--and after all that work!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the job search.
Dang! It's not getting any easier for you is it? But trust me, things always suck just before they get better - that's how we know it's good. I'm sending happy thoughts your way.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry about being depressing. These times are tough, all around. I hope that one of those rejections has another look at you. There's a silver lining somewhere, I just hope it comes through fast.
ReplyDeleteOh no! I am so sorry to hear the internship didn't work out and the 3 courses over the limit put a damper on things? Keep looking, I am sure something will turn up. My brother went through something similar last year and was hoping to gain some pharmacy experience but no hospitals were hiring...he started showing up to pharmacies asking if they were looking for people. Then he had several offers...keep looking.
ReplyDeleteOh, man. Sorry :(
ReplyDeleteAw man, that's too bad. I'm in a stage in my life right now too, in which I really try to find a job and all other people I know seem to get through so easily. It sucks.
ReplyDeleteyou have to talk with all those students who are more successful than you and see where you are doing things wrong. Generally speaking, while studying you really have to be well informed, inspired and hardworking, and you have to be in contact with fellow students so that you would not fall out of the train.
ReplyDeleteno idea sorry
ReplyDeleteHey I might sound too optimistic for ur case..but for the record I had been rejected by more than 25 companies for my internship but then just 2 days before the deadline I was offered a place in a consulting company..I was really depressed when all my friends got a place except me..but then yeah I got it finally..so take it as a challenge :)
ReplyDeletewhat i'm trying to say dont give up and never lose hope..maybe God is saving you for the best company
All da best..:)
awh man that sucks that you got REJECTED!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear that you didn't get the internship, but this could only mean one thing: something better is coming your way. I wish you the best of luck in your search though!
ReplyDeletesorry to hear that bro
ReplyDeletekeep your head up and look for other opportunities
Hello! I am sorry...And I hope very weel very soon! Good lucks!
ReplyDeletenice post :D
ReplyDeleteYou did all that shit just to get into that internship and they just rejected you without any second chance? Talk about harsh. I hope it gets better for you soon. Maybe that internship wasn't meant for you because a much better internship awaits.
