I Messed up Again

Who remembers my horrific scheduling mishap a few months ago? Nobody? Thank goodness. Because maybe now my second and even more horrific and stupid scheduling mishap will not look as bad.

And when I say bad, I mean, I screwed up my degree bad.

What am I even doing?

So to reiterate, I'm in the Psychology Specialization program. Unique to this Specialization is an Internship program which I'm also trying to get into. However, I exceeded the course limit for the Internship, so to compensate, I try to reapply and reduce the number of courses I'm currently taking per term so I don't exceed the course limit as much. Hopefully to increase my chances of getting the internship because they tell me the number of exceptions they make are quite high.

What I forgot though was that the Specialization Program had a minimum course requirement per term.

And I no longer met it.

I didn't have the requirements for my degree.

Out you go.

Let's be honest here. I'm kind of screwed. Everything I've worked for has been for naught. I've already missed the deadline for graduating, the deadline for adding courses was way back in January. The best I can hope for is graduating with a Major in Psychology in the Fall and scramble to find a minor in something else. The internship is like some distant dream at this point.

Unless.

Unless I wanted to do something that most people would consider crazy.

This will be be fun...

The coordinator gave me the following option:
  • Talk to professors who you've worked with in the past.
  • See if you can take on a second research course with one.
  • Join the class of another one.
The coordinator was willing to pull a few strings for me and make an exception again if the profs were willing to.

Note this would be in addition to everything I'm taking right now. Midterms are in less than 2 weeks, I have to start studying for my current 2 courses and prepare to launch an experiment for one lab. On top of this I'd have to catch up on everything taught in a new course and start running an experiment in the other lab.

So what did I do?

Of course I took her up on the offer. What choice did I have?

Basically.

This is do or die. I have invested too much time and effort into trying to get this internship to fail now let alone my degree. Employers want people who have actual work experience, if I want to have a chance at a job when I graduate, I need this internship. And to even have a chance to get the internship, I need to remain in the Specialization program.

I will succeed in taking on all of these courses or kill myself trying.

And it's going to take a lot more than a bloody course limit to stop me.

  4. Oh no man, I can't believe you picked a course you're not really qualified for, I have to admit that was a big mistake but if you think you can do it then try your best mate, you are a smart guy after all.

  5. You have the right attitude, it's best to persevere now. I was in that same situation but I accepted my failing and just quit the course. Not once ever since have I thought this to be a good choice. :)

  6. That's the attitude man! You never know if you can pull it off until you try!

  26. OH MAN...I am so sorry to hear about the schooling situation. Sometimes we don't exactly get the best advice from our advisors so I always asked do I have to take _______? They were so sick of that question but you don't meet requirements you don't get that paper! Good luck and you will go far in life, it's just a small, while it feels like a HUGE, bump in the road right now.

    ReplyDelete
  27. You'll be able to do it!! I know that it's rough when you think you met all requirements and then silly colleges slap something else in your face. If you're determined and dedicated, you can do anything you want. :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Ugh. That sounds like an absolute horror story. But good luck. When you have to do it, you will do it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Geez, good luck man. You seem like a pretty hard worker, so hope you get that internship.

  31. rough mate. Hope you find some air at some point, otherwise just keep swimming, just keep swimming.

  32. Hot damn. As you said, the only thing you can do is grit yer teeth and push ahead forward. But it's gonna be a hell of a lot of work, so try not to burn yerself out.

To put it simply, I do not envy yer current situation.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Good luck :< Hope you manage to not go nuts with all the additional work so close to midterms and manage to get that Internship :>

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh wow! But hey, with the sort of determination you've expressed in this post I know you can do it! All the best!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Sounds complicated. Then again, I am a massive thicko who never got a degree. Good luck with whatever it is you're trying to achieve!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Good luck and I remember the last screw up but this is worse....

    ReplyDelete

  38. I think you are going to rock it! I have complete faith in you!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Man it sounds like you are stuck.... I really hope one of the professors is nice enough to help you out.... but if they aren't..
    Remember there is always blackmail!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Im sorry to hear this. But, it will only make you stronger!! Go get that degree!

    ReplyDelete
  41. i like you attitude. others might have grown despondent. that's a tough situation but you are rising to the challenge. and you will be rewarded somehow.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Good luck! I don't envy you... but I hope for the best.
I'll make sure to follow you to watch how this unfolds...

    ReplyDelete
  43. Haha. Awesome blog you got here. Following for sure.

And you're definitely right about one thing. If I wanted girls, I should've gone into nursing. Programming is more my style though.

    ReplyDelete
  44. oh man that sounds like its going to be a lot of work, good luck man! you can do it

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'd say do whatever you can to get in that internship program. sounds like you really could use it. But either way, having a college degree in any form is better than not having one. right?

    ReplyDelete
  46. good luck with that, internships are crazy hard to come by here, I've been "coordinating" with my college for 2 years and they haven't been able to place me in anything, and I've already finished up through my bachelors classes when the internship was for my associates, yeah

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think your blog will suffer...... well something's gotta give hasn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  48. you really need to get that internship and you need better planning, Damien! Your life depends on this.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Good luck!! I hope everything works out with the degree. I was in a similar situation my last year in college, but everything worked out in the end because I got really good at manipulating the department heads into crediting me for things I never did......

    xoxo

  50. man try your hardest
think of all the people who dont have this opportunity and have to live in poverty all their lives

    ReplyDelete
  51. Sounds bad, I hope you can get out of it.

  52. oh these mishaps happen to students everywhere - don't be so hard on yourself

    ReplyDelete
  53. that totally sucks. u must be feeling the rage of a 1000 suns. i know that feel. this entire week has been full of piss off

    ReplyDelete
  54. Wow, that really sucks. But, at least you had some options. Let us know how it goes.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Good luck! I had a very similar scenario happen to me my senior year. I found out my Disney internship did not count towards my major or even for credit so I was behind a full semester and I needed an internship. This clearly couldnt happen as I was working two jobs and in college so I ended up dropping that concentration and picking up a writing minor. All and all I think it was a good choice.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Nice that your coordinator was willing to help you work the system. Whenever there were snafus at my school, they more or less said, "Well, sucks to be you!"

    ReplyDelete
  57. We all get stuck between a rock and a hard place sometimes!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Good luck! It sounds like a lot of work--but you can do it!

    ReplyDelete
  59. That sucks kiddo. However I'm really proud that you've managed to come up with a solution. I think you'll be able to pull it off; and when you do it'll make a great story for your kids someday.

    ReplyDelete
  60. That really sucks. However I think it's great that you were able to come up with a solution, even if it means driving yourself to the point of exhaustion.

Lotsa Vitamin C and hand sanitizer!! This is no time to get sick.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Sounds like your'e going through tough times there. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I feel your pain. I am also working on getting an internship for the summer semester and every time I think I get somewhere, I end up nowhere.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Ouch, keep at it though. Eventually it'll turn out OK in the end, I hope.

    ReplyDelete
  64. i hope you figure a way to make it all work

    ReplyDelete
  65. Oh no. How terrible. All the best, though!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Oh no! Good luck Stay on it! Hope it works out :)

    ReplyDelete
  67. Whoa! This sounds like a serious problem indeed. I hope hope that you get some of those courses back to meet the requirement.

    ReplyDelete
  68. The only thing you can do is give it a shot!!! I have faith that you can do it! Good luck~

    ReplyDelete
  69. Ah man, that's harsh. I say go for it though and don't look back. It might be tough but in the long run you'll end up with the experience and qualifications, and you sure as hell sound determined enough. Good luck and you'll have to come to England one day and experience our ever changing weather! We got snow today :) xxx

  70. Yikes! Good luck with fulfilling the requirements.
