Me not Healthy: Allergies (Part 2)

Usually, I'm a giant sneezing and itchy mess when spring/summer finally comes around. Red eyes, runny nose, itchy palette, I've experienced that garbage more times than I care to remember. However, this year was pretty good. Nothing in February, March or April. Which is very strange.

Maybe it had something to do with all the random bouts of snow we've been getting. You know, killing flowers, catching all the pollen or something.

See? Living in Canada has its benefits!

And I was looking forward to getting through May with no problems at all. But it always starts slowly.

First your eyes feel a bit itchy, along with the roof of your mouth. Maybe you ate something you were allergic to. Either way something doesn't feel right.

And then you sneeze and your face is just covered in a spray of liquid. And you'd wipe your face off except you're still sneezing and you're just making a huge mess all over the place.

Make it stop!

It could be due to the snow I guess. Maybe it trapped all the pollen and dust together and when it melted released it all at the same time. Like some kind of allergy bomb.

So right now I'm having the worst pollen allergies I've had in a long time. As in, if I don't have tissue paper with me when it hits, my nose is going to look like a disgusting waterfall in a minute. Really not fun when you're trying to brush your teeth or when you're eating lunch with your girlfriend.

Yes... This will make the food more appetizing...

I'm really considering changing anti-histamine brands. Normally I use Reactine, it has served me well over the years and acted quickly.

Right now, I'm questioning if it even works on some days. Sometimes I'll take 1 and hours later I'm still dribbling like some 12 year old who can't wipe his nose properly. And when it does work, it's certainly much later than the advertised 20 minutes.

At least it's cheaper from the other stuff I've seen. Guess you get what you pay for.

Yay drugs!

Maybe I'll do what my Aunt does and take the anti-histamine before she sleeps. Maybe I need to switch brands.

Maybe I need to stay in the basement and never leave the house again until all the plants are dead.

  1. Reminds me of a story of my mom. She used to have really bad allergies as a young adult which made driving difficult. Her solution was to plug both nostrils with wads of tissue.

One day, when she was stopped at a red light, the car next to her started honking in a crazy and wild fashion. She turned to look. There were three of her brothers in the front of a pickup truck - and all three were waving and laughing, with tissues stuck up their noses to tease her.

Lol, I have an awesome family!

  2. I think you should change up your medicine. It might help. I have a sensitive nose, so when I sneeze, it makes me sneeze again, and again, and again. I tend to leave my nose until I'm sure I've done sneezing.

  3. Man I'm sorry to hear that you're having to go through to this. Summer really is something we're supposed to look forward to and enjoy so I'm pretty pissed for you that you need to suffer through tough allergies every year. At least it took longer to come haha.

  4. Hay fever? Hay fever.
For some reason I've been able to manage without any meds lately, though yeah, sometimes when I don't have tissues with me my sleeves become a huge mess and whatnot. I feel you. ):

  5. you can also use antialergy nose sprays which are very good because they bring the immediate relief and they clear your nose right away. Even the simplest nose sprays based on sea water help because they clean your nostrils from allergens.

  8. I hope you feel better. Take rest and drink a lot of water. Let people around you know that you might be cranky so you may be excused as you are suffering from allergies.
Keep your ressistance level good. People have advised me to take vitamins and I have started taking them. They help to a certain extent.

  11. That sounds horrible. I've never had problems with allergies up until about a year ago, but still its very mild. I think the allergies will get you even in the basement, plants have a way of finding you. They are watching you. Waiting.

You have my sympathies. I have the smae problem - only it hasn't kicked in yet this year. You've just reminded me of what I have to look forward to in the next few months. Yay!

  20. I've suffered from hayfever since my 20's but the old adage that it does get better as you get older is true! So wait till you are maybe past 40! But seriously I do empathise deeply with this! I think the only medication that worked for me is the one you squirt up each nostril - I think it contains some kind of steroids. They gave me headaches but they worked!

    Good luck!! Take care

  23. HAHA! I love this. I was declaring that a miracle had happened and I had finally grown out of hayfever, at 24. Then, low and behold May rolls around and I take a trip to Budapest. I become a horrible sniffly nightmare and require a quick dash to the chemist and now back in dreary still require the drugs. Right now I want to scratch my throat out. NOT COOL!

How about just moving farther up north? That could totally be fun.

  25. Thank god I don't have pollen allergies. I know some people who have them and I can't help but feel pity for them. I'm allergic to some food but at least I can avoid those easily compared to pollen which can spawn everywhere.

  26. i'm allergic to some stuff too... we just have to deal with it.

  27. Feel bad for you :< I haven't had bad allergies in a long while and I'm hoping it stays that way. Hopefully it goes away soon :<

  28. I always hear about this, but luckily I'm not allergic to anything. Sucks for you though :/.

  29. I think the best cure for allergies is, live in space. Or work in any high tech firm that requires seriously clean areas.

Chip manufacturing (microchips), satellites and what have you. That way productive AND clean!

  30. Oh man, I can't even imagine the horrors of allergy. Keep fighting!

  31. My wife has terrible allergies, and the only real cure seems to be expensive allergy shots at a specialist clinic. She no longer has health insurance, so either she pays an arm and a leg or she suffers. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

  32. My allergies haven't been too fun this season, but mostly when it comes to my lungs and ears...weird I know. I've been using a nasal spray (tmi?), which has definitely helped a lot, surprisingly.

  33. Allergies are literally the worst.

  34. mixing up the anti-histamines helps. You build up resistance over time.

  35. Everyone down here has been suffering mightily with allergies for a few months and it was 92 balmy degrees here today, in mid May. Wanna trade places for awhile kiddo?
