Adventures in Driving

I don't like driving. I don't care for cars or racing games and I don't think I ever will. Which is odd because nearly every other male person I know starts drooling the instant some amazing, fancy, new and foreign car is brought into conversation. They're up to date on maintenance and performance boosters. And know how to fix their car if anything should ever happen to it.

For me, it's just a tool. If it gets me from point A to point B. I'm happy.

Google images claims this is a car.

And because I live in North America (specifically Canada) I pretty much need to drive to get to anywhere. Public transit is a joke with unreliable buses and trains. What would take me 10 minutes to drive to would take half an hour of busing.

And it's even worse in the winter. I'm fairly certain that most Canadians have experienced standing in a blizzard for at least an hour waiting for a bus to drive by.

And then said bus drives away without stopping.

Could be worse I guess.

So I've been making an effort to get as much practice driving as possible. Theresa has been bugging me a lot to start driving too. At least this way we can spend more time together and less time busing. It also allows us go to places where buses are less likely to pass. We can eat without worrying about when the next bus will arrive.

We can do things in said car.

Get your head out of the gutter. I meant we could take naps.

But the biggest problem I have is that I'm not exactly the greatest driver. And Theresa gets carsick easily. To give an example of how easily she gets motion sick, Minecraft is unplayable for her because of how the view bobs along (to mimic movement in real-life).

So that means I can't have a single sudden stop, swift turn or any other forms or terrible driving. I don't want to make my girlfriend carsick. I want her to feel comfortable with me being in the driver's seat.

Don't want this stereotype to be true with me.

But the only way to get better is practice. And looks like I need to keep practicing as much as I can. Theresa comes home on Sunday. And I want a date with her as soon as possible.

  1. I'm not insane crazy about cars like some guys but I do like them. It was a little hectic when I was first getting comfortable with driving but after a while it became like second nature and it's also quite relaxing. Just cruising along can be enjoyable for me at least.

  2. I don't have a license but wish I did. Driving looks like so much fun! Well, ok, not just looks... it *is* so much fun! I've driven in karting races in France and loved it :)

Good luck with your practice - and make sure she always sits in the front passenger seat as that helps (but I'm sure she knows that already).

  3. You can turn on view-bobbing in Minecraft, you know? ;D

But yeah, I'm sort of in the same boat as you. I've never had a thing for cars, and I really can't be bothered taking driving lessons, especially not since they cost a lot and I need the money for other things right now.

  4. I haven't driven in a while now, but I think I was starting to get good. Ish. You should get in as much practice as you can while she's gone, and then surprise her when she gets home :)

  5. I still don't know driving a car. I want to learn! :)

  6. I get carsick too, as a passenger. But maybe Theresa should drive? The driver never gets carsick...

  7. You're not alone. I don't drool over cars and haven't got a single clue how to fix them. As long as the car runs, that's all that matters.

But unlike you, I'm an excellent driver!

  8. I think you found your hobby for the next few weeks! Practice makes perfect. Just make sure to wear a helmet :)

  9. That picture of the first car looks like the vitamin pills I use to take. Sounds like having to travel by bus in Canada is pure hell. Good luck with everything.

  10. I love driving, and I love cars, but man I feel bad for people who get carsick easily. My family has been in racing for a while, mainly NHRA, so that probably has something to do with my passion for anything with wheels.

  11. I too love driving, but no so good at buying cars!
Where we live, both here and Canada, a four-wheel drive is part of life. Winters are hellish, and unfortunately Summer has missed out England this year...maybe a boat would be a better choice.
Good Luck with the travel sickness and have some plastic bags handy! ;)

  13. I hate driving, but I can usually stomach it as long as I don't hit the freeway very often

  14. I'm not into cars, but I absolutely love driving. I really don't care what I'm driving, as long as it moves (fairly fast!). It's one of my favourite things to do, it cheers me up :)
Also, that first picture looks more like a giant computer mouse than a car!

I'm trying to get my license this summer too :/

  16. I love cars, but hate driving. I could have been a race car driver, but the whole not wanting to drive thing stops me. Keep practicing!

  18. I know how to hit the gas pedal and have no clue other than that and don't really care. Not a bad driver either though.

  20. Fair enough it gets you from A to B but surely driving in a BMW would be preferable over an old banger ?

  21. To prevent being carsick you need to make sure you look out of the window while the car is moving. I have the same problem when someone else is driving, therefore I always make sure I look out the window.

  22. Admitting you're not the greatest driver is much better than being overconfident. Just remember that safety comes before everything. That blue thing you googled looks like a submarine.

  24. Eek I got here late. I hope you've added mileage to that car!

  25. I'm the same way I guess, don't give two shits about cars/racing. My car sucks and I'd like a cooler, fancy one but like you said, it's really just a tool (or...vehicle ha) to get me from point A to point B.

  26. Much that I'd never be without a car I'm not madly into them and as long as they get me to where I need to go I'm happy.
Having said that driving cars around a racetrack is a whole world of fun.

  27. It's a small comfort to know that Canadian mass transit sucks just as bad as that in the U.S.

  28. I totally agree! You really should learn how to drive. It gives you an independence that everyone should have :)

  29. Such a cool car pic...although it looks like a big bubble. Anything you do in life you will do it better of you have confidence in your skills..and practice :-) Have a great date soon!
