Project Jason: Getting swole

I've been consistently working out now since the beginning of July, 2-3 times a week whenever I can. When a fitness center opened up in the mall where one of my part-time jobs was, I really didn't have an excuse anymore for not going to the gym. After about a month, I haven't really noticed any chances to my physique but hey, this stuff takes time right?

Generally I try to get an hour or so before I start a shift at work but sometimes things don't go in my favor. This results in me trying to get in a quick work-out during my short, half an hour break. It's a good thing I don't really sweat that much. It's also a good thing that I'm working around grease all the time so that's all anyone can smell anyways.

Mmm... French fries..

Somehow, I got roped into getting a personal trainer for a little bit. It was pricey, but my rationalization was that because I haven't worked out in a long time, it might be a good idea to make sure that I'm using all the equipment properly. Don't want to hurt myself. Plus, there are tons of new machines that I haven't used before and I wanted a chance to learn how to use the free weights.

And so my sessions start. Nothing too crazy. I like my trainer, he was pretty good, I liked what we were doing and I went home feeling more sore and tired than I normally would. Which is a good thing, what's the point of heading to the gym or getting a personal trainer otherwise?

And then suddenly I was informed that my old personal trainer had suddenly disappeared.

Wut.

It was really weird too, because we were scheduled to have a work-out at 1PM. He calls me in the morning, asking if we can move it to 3PM. Sure, no problem. At 2PM, the gym calls me and says that he's no longer working there.

I'm given a new trainer, and while he was nice, I certainly didn't feel as exhausted as I was accustomed to. In his defense, we were doing more free weights and posture related things. And it was to make sure that my form was correct for future exercises.

My last session is on Friday. And unfortunately, I can't really afford to keep hiring a personal trainer. So that's that. Time to start working out again on me own.

  3. That is weird how he just up and left. Takes a loooooooooooong time to notice a difference, unless on is a steriod freak.

  4. I bought my son a few sessions with a personal trainer to get started for his birthday. I"m sure your first one gave you some good guidelines for a workout...and you'll do fine on your own.

  5. Hm. The old trainer might have had attendance issues? Either way, I think it was a good idea to have someone familiarize you with the equipment. It's crazy how easy it is to use it wrong! Then you can drop off the training sessions and work out on your own for cheaper!

  8. I wonder what happened to the 1st trainer?

    Since you spent some time on a supervised gym training it would be easier for you to do it alone. Good luck to that and hope you will post your pic when you are looking like Johny Bravo ;)

  13. Interesting that you decided to get a personal trainer buddy. Jamie's always almost acted like one of those for me so I haven't needed to go that route but often it actually tempted me all the same, especially since personal trainers are the gel behind the success of people like Christian Bale when they need amazing bodies for film roles. Glad you're still going though mate, even though your personal trainers disappearance was very strange indeed.

  14. By the way mate, not one drop to drink although I had two coffees which might have made me hyper, the only excuse I can think of. He hadn't left the table for an hour either, I think I was just so used to him not being there and having free reign to discuss him and his family.

  17. Ha! I love that term. Getting swole.

    You're a stronger man than I, working near fries all day. I have enough willpower to lift, do drills, or train tabata for upwards of 2 hours, but I don't think I'd have enough willpower to turn down fresh made fries if they were in my face 24/7.

  18. Yes it does take time but you WILL see results if you're consistent. I lost 45 pounds over the course of two years. It's a marathon not a sprint, but it's well worth it my friend.

  19. As long as you have learned proper form and proper nutrition you will be just fine with out a trainer. YouTube is a wonderful resource for new moves and form.

  20. These types of jobs, trainers, are come and go. But good that you put out a bit of mula to get back into it. Keep up with the training.

  22. Well at least you'll now know how to use the equipment properly. Yep it's early days. I use weights for my arms and it takes a good few weeks before the muscles really show any definition but it will happen.

  23. Good for you, working out! Even a half hour helps - I often do a quick 15 minutes of weights down in our work fitness center on my coffee break.
    Never been a fan of trainers, though. Always a solo exerciser. :)

  25. I still work out quite regularly, but over the past several weeks, I've started to experience trouble with my knees. This has caused me to cut way back on the treadmill (I'm afraid my knees will lock up and I'll go flying into the teenager on the elliptical). So, the balance of my workout has been on the exercise bikes. Boring, but I work up a great sweat.
