Moms are hard to buy for.

Or it could just be my Mom. It's hard to say. Maybe it's just hard to buy gifts for extremely practical people which is exactly what my Mother is. Thus, when her birthday comes around no one has any idea what to get her.

I remember getting her flowers one year to which she responded "Don't get me flowers, they die." Mom doesn't like sweet things so getting her a box of chocolates results in my Dad eating all of them. Cards are also no good unless they're handmade because she thinks it's kind of a waste of money otherwise. Unfortunately the only person who has any artistic talent in the Wei family is my sister. Don't expect anything amazing from me. Who do I look like, Dalf?

Behold! The limits of my artistic ability!

Honestly, I think her favorite present that she's ever gotten from us was a coffee mug from my sister. And that was because her other mug was getting kind of old. I have an idea of what to get my Mother in the future but unless anyone knows where I can get a plushie of the Pokemon Oddish for a reasonable price it will remain an idea.

This guy, right here.

This year however, I'm going to try something different. I don't know how many of you have heard of or even have this store in your city but mine does. They're called "Edible Arrangements" and they basically create bouquets of fruit that you can eat. The prices are fairly reasonable. I mean, I've bought flowers for my girlfriend before and they're roughly the same price. Actually I think she'd like the edible ones better.

This is the one I got for Mom. It's called an Apple Daisy.

We'll see how Mom likes it. I picked the bouquet up today and the service was pretty good. I mean, I was half an hour early for the pick up time I asked for and it was already ready. If it tastes as good as it looks, they might be getting a repeat customer.

  1. OMG my mom is the hardest person to shop for as well...and her birthday is Friday...and I still don't know what to get her. At my old job a co-worker brought an edible arrangement to share with everyone and it was delicious so I think your mom will be pretty happy. As far as that headband, I think you should totally make one for your gf...it can be worn with a ponytail :)

  3. Daww. My mom is easy to shop for, if you don't mind filling her place up with more sheep/meerkat stuff.

  4. Too right buddy. Honestly I hate presents between family. You give them something, they give you something similar. It all balances out. Nice post all the same though man, keep up the good work and everything! :)

  5. My mom is easy, we tell each other what we want lol. But my dad, OMG the worst. He does nothing and uses nothing. I think that is a great idea the edible bouquet. There is one in my city.

  7. I usually just give my little sister some cash and let her decide what to buy. We don't usually give gifts since we usually spend it on food for the celebration like cake, spaghetti, fried chicken etc.

  8. The Apple Daisy should work, even though you mentioned she doesn't like sweet things. The only thing I can get my mom to appreciate is going out somewhere to eat, or a jewerly piece, bought with my dads and mine money thrown together.

  11. Good choice! Pretty AND tasty. And I don't think you should rule out a homemade card. My kids are not artistic at all...but I treasure anything they make :)

  12. What me and my brother did for my mom who was born in july, was every year since I was like 10 I buy her a rose plant at the local greenhouse, they cost like $10 and now that Im 30 she has a rose garden in her backyard that nearly surrounds the property. She loves it and she can always look back and see those first ones we bought her 20 years ago.

  20. Buy flowers. That can't go wrong.

I would say "give her a bear hug!" but you're Asian, soooo. Nope. Stay away from that.

  21. That's a brilliant idea and the bouquet looks delicious too, and I'd love an Oddish cuddly too! I had a Poliwhirl cuddly when I was younger and loved it back when my brother and I were really into Pokemon. xxx

  22. it's beautiful your mother will love it

  23. Why a plushie of an Oddish? Because it's a plant that doesn't die? (Go with Vileplume, Roseli, Roserade, etc)

  24. how about writing a poem for mom like Calvin did in Calvin & Hobbes?

  25. My present every year is that I'm getting good grades and that I'm not dead yet. Seems to work well.

  26. surprisingly, my mom is pretty easy to buy for. my mother-in-law though? impossible.

  27. I think those Edible Arrangements are perfect. On a side note, I'm pretty sure its just hard to buy for asian women in general

  28. Oh, don't worry! My mom is almost impossible to buy things for... or maybe they just want our love? haha

  29. Both my mom and dad are hard to shop for. They're both totally practical and with my dad, if he wants something, he just goes out and gets it. My mom doesn't wear jewelry and doesn't care much about clothes. I've always really admired her for not being materialistic, but it makes things hard when you're trying to think of a gift! I start planning for her birthday/Christmas/Mother's Day months in advance. Speaking of, I guess I have to start thinking of some Christmas ideas!

Hope your mom likes your gift!

  31. exactly what 2 pesos said, its hard enough living on your own and i don't want to give my mom one of my cup o noodles

  32. ohhh edible arrangements huh. My gift for my Mom's birthday is probably one of those Lagostina cook ware. like a set. She has always dreamed to have one of those.

    ReplyDelete
  33. You know, I actually do have those around. I might try that for someone's birthday soon.

  34. They are pretty annoying to buy for, my mother is all "Just get me slippers or something.." But I know if I just got her slippers she'd be pissed.

  35. Love the picture of the pokemon! :D

  36. Gotta agree with Angela up there. Keeping your distance from materialism is an admirable, beautiful trait.

Until that fateful day in late December.

Which could also refer to my mother's birthday.

  42. Moms don't need anything besides you love and perhaps some good loving. @ 1904- you should be more concerned about your mom I bet she's a excellent cook and makes dank cookies... I'll just leave this here, hope she likes it "Mother lover"- the lonely island

  43. The idea seems great. A couple of close friends have ordered from them before and them seemed to love it. I'm not all one for fruit, but the thought seems nice and different.

    Hope she likes the gift.
