Financial Situation (Part 1)

Ok, classes resume on Wednesday for me. Fortunately I've been able to get my parents to cover for my tuition for this term because I've barely got a grand left in the bank. And the sad thing is that most of that grand will be spent on textbooks which CONVENIENTLY have had the prices raised. Again.

The used ones are probably outdated by now too.

I'll be working part-time at my fastfood job but due to time needed to study I'll only be making about $200 a month. But then I have expenses that need to be taken care of. I'm the kind of guy that likes to plan and ahead and prepare. I have blog posts stored in my head, half written (or actually half typed out in advance), I do things like buy presents way months early and store them in my closet, you get the idea. But due to having no money I can't exactly do that now can I?

I'd starve if it weren't for my parents.

I have considered 3 other forms of potential income given my current situation, but I'll share those in my next blog post. I've gotten a mild cold in the summer of all times, I need to to try out a device to hopefully help with my sleeping (I'll post pictures later) and based on feedback on the last post I'll guess I'll keep doing what I'm doing. Thanks again, and feel free to suggest anything at anytime. I'm open to suggestions.

  1. have you considered renting your texts online I hear you can save a bunch of money that way

  2. have you checked ebay for used text books. My friends who are studying in the US always buy used textbook to save money.

Btw, that life is tough means that you should be a badass. Be strong!

  3. When I was at high school, we changed book every other year (cuz teachers got percentage of books sold). Corrupted bastards.

  4. Good luck with the whole finance. It annoys the hell out of me how much education actually costs :( It was great of your parents to pay too :) My dad's always buying me things, and for my sisters, and when I'm rich most of it's going to him lol. And while I'm poor, pretty much all of it is going to go to him. Those text books look pretty big, I bet you could batter the cashier with it then make a run for it. Just be prepared for questions on why your textbook has blood on it.

  5. this makes me thankful to be in Australia where the government pay your uni fees and they just take it out of your tax later in life when you earn lots of money from the degree hmmm... if it was only that easy to get a job!

  6. You can't download the books? Or photocopy them?

In my country we are so used to pirate stuff like that that it's weird to think that someone actually buys the thing...

Good luck, man! You deserve it!

  7. What about freelance writing?

I want to get a job too, but NO ONE hires fifteen year olds. Even Yahoo! Associative requires paid contributors to be 18. BLARGH.

Hope the finance thing works out.

  8. Money is kind of a stupid thing. You got nothing of it, you need it. You got all of it, you need to get rid of it.

  9. I'm sure you will find some way to earn some cash during studies.
Back in college, I was giving lessons to kids and I also did translation job for some magazines in order to earn some money for food and other expenses.

  10. It's so shocking how much textbooks cost...hopefully you can find some good use ones.

PS...I answered your question on my blog, but I think it would be fine to substitute white wine for red in my marinade. Hope you try it~thanks for stopping by!

  11. I feel your pain bro. Hell, I've considered just not buying the text books at all and just looking online for their question banks of we had homework to do in them.

  12. Good luck with your finances too man. I'm going through a similar situation right now and it's absolutely terrible. Hope things will get better for you soon.

  13. So, I gotta wait for tom for the pictures? haha

    You'll be fine :)

  14. I'm with Linux. You can get about 75% off original price sometimes if you're lucky. It's worth looking through.

  15. Well, maybe you could buy old textbooks directly from older students. Hang in there!

  16. Sucks to hear about your situation. College needs to be free to everyone with grades to be accepted

  17. Hope you can pull through! I'm completely scared of being broke in college. You sound pretty responsible though.

  18. I know that feel. You should be able to make more than the 200 bucks at a fast food gig though.. I don't know how it works over there but where I live we get paid twice the normal salary for working night shifts. Med school is tough as it is without lacking sleep though, it's a tough situation for sure. Good thing your parents can help you out.

  19. I just wasted about $50k on tuition fees. Money is the source of all my problems.

  20. I try to cut textbook costs with ebooks. More specifically, looking for a free download. Piracy may not be completely legal, but some people can't afford to be legal.

  22. Check out www.abebooks.com, I've had good luck there.

  23. Buy a laptop (if you don't have one already), and download all the books you need for free.

  24. If you have a big wang and a lot of stomach you can become a gigolo. Old ladies with a lot of money should be your #1 target. Go tiger

  25. Dude, I know.
    Educaation is expensive. :S

And, to make things worse (well, for me), I can't get a job due to the fact that my classes take up most of my day and the rest goes on studying.
My country has one of the hardest educational systems in Europe.

  26. Glad to hear your parents are helping you out! Good luck on making money;)

  27. So you sold your soul to mc?

  29. school has gotten much more expensive!

  30. Textbooks and tuition are the two most outrageously inflated parts of college life. It sucks. My advice, order black market Chinese versions of the books. Seriously, those chaps don't honor Copyright laws. As for the tuition, sounds like you need to find yourself a nice sugar-momma.

    ReplyDelete
  31. textbooks are such a scam. My brother is the manager of a college text book store, and i know full well how much they rip students off.
If you can pirate your books, I say go for it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hard times, soon you will start getting used to maximize every penny so stay strong ^_^

  33. I wouldn't be able to go to college if it wasn't for my parents; they're pretty useful things to have at times like these.

    ReplyDelete
  34. You could do this, sell semen and then sell blood. Try to do stupid things for money on fiverr, start an ebay business, create a bunch of websites. Plenty of options

  35. I really get the 'will study for food' :P. I'm kinda in the same situation.

  36. Ah man I'm starting uni this month, I need to buy textbooks and stuff too ;/

    ReplyDelete
  37. Man, good thing that my country has free education. I would never waste so much money on it otherwise.
I did not even need to buy any books, most of the stuff was online for download.

    That's not helping, huh? :/
    Err, sorry.... GL/HF. :P

  38. try selling some stuff on ebay or doing side jobs off CL in your spare time. i make a good 20k a year non-taxable doing that.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I don't envy students today. When I was in college a long long time ago in what seems like a galaxy far away, I would work during the summer and have enough to get me through the entire school year with money to spare. Things were less complicated then.

  40. Props to you for striving to do it on your own as much as possible.

I always hated how we'd have to buy a slightly updated version of the professor's books. The only difference would be the page number so we could not follow the syllabus using the old version.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Good luck :D Maybe you should put a "donate" button on your blog :D

  42. This higher education is a bloody costly business but I do the same about planning ahead though.

    ReplyDelete
  43. good luck with that but well having a little hidden money somewhere always helps =3

good luck with your work and studies

  44. A lot of us have financial troubles in college, I'm sure you'll find a way to make the most of it. Everything costs so much (tuition, textbooks, etc.) that it seems like they don't want people to gain knowledge or get degrees.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Money issues can be such a pain. Hope you get it sorted.

    ReplyDelete
  46. i feel you bro. Text books kicked my ass financially this semester as San Diego State. And its really really hard to find a decent part time job to fit inbetween 5 class that doesnt involve a scale.
Make sure you are able to fit in some time for yourself like for the gym, video games, ect.

  47. You need to begin mugging people. This is how I am putting myself through school. It pays the bills, and allows for an outlet to relieve that pent up aggression.

PLUS THEY MIGHT HAVE A BOOK YOU NEED ON THEM!

  48. gl man! I'm financed by my parents. Lucky me

    ReplyDelete
  49. I guess I'm in the same boat as you for the textbooks, and it doesn't help that my second year tuition is unregulated by the government, which pretty much means that they can charge what they want.

    ReplyDelete
  50. a lot of this sounds pretty familiar..

  51. As a fellow student, I am very interested in the other forms of income you have in store!
