Update on Theresa

For those unaware, my girlfriend Theresa was recently admitted to the hospital for gallstones. Yeah, she's young, like early twenties but I guess she was pre-dispositioned for this stuff? Genetic or something? That's my best explanation because this woman eats a lot healthier than me.

I mean, I don't eat a lot, but when I do it tends to be fatty, high-cholesterol garbage. I should probably eat more salads, and get more fiber. Cut down on my meat. I've seen what Theresa eats for lunch, it's homemade stuff, rice and vegetables. Generic Chinese food.

Opposite of this.

Regardless, a gallstone blocked something. And because she has bad genes, they decided to remove the gallbladder entirely to prevent another incident from happening in the future. Also, I might be crazy, but because Theresa's a med student, I think that's why they started operating on her so quickly.

As in, she was admitted on Sunday, and they did the operations on Tuesday and Wednesday of the same week. Keep in mind that when she was admitted, she was told that her surgery was considered elective (aka, not important) and she might have to wait until next year for an opening, maybe sometime in the summer at the earliest.

I know Canada is renown for its universal healthcare. What it's not known for is it's ridiculously long waiting times.

A doctor will come see me soon, I know it.

So, the first surgery on Tuesday was to remove the gallstone blockage that was initially causing her pain. No problem, simple incision, remove stone, no problem.

NOPE. Theresa is a super, special snowflake who somehow managed to have a stone that was larger than predicted so when the surgeons tried to pull it out, it tore something, and she bled where she wasn't supposed to.

Yay, complications.

Oops.

Ok fine, no big deal. They go onto to remove her gallbladder the next day. And it goes perfectly fine with no problems.

Ha, I'm just kidding. Something with the anesthetics messed up. I don't know the details, the only that something went wrong, another complication, so they had to hold her in the hospital for another day to monitor her.

You're a special one Theresa, I'm not sure how you do it.

Just for you.

She's fine now though. Released from the hospital on Thursday she now she studying like crazy. Yep, typical med student mentality. People who have gall bladder removals are supposed to have 3 weeks off to recover, I wouldn't be surprised if she dragged herself back to class on Monday.

Best of luck to her, I'm just glad she's alright.

  1. I'm glad she's okay too. Really long waiting lists seem to be the major downside of universal healthcare and I'm not entirely sure what causes them, but I can understand what with being British and having our own system complete with lengthy waiting times. She really is quite the trooper too. I'm just going to tell myself her work is so intensive she can't afford to not study, and it's not just that she's completely crazy when it comes to studying.

  3. you should try that turbaconepic sometime, 5 birds wrapped in bacon in a pig covered in bacon with that glaze, my mouth just waters.

That aside I hope your girlfriend recovers quickly, that's got to suck.

  8. Glad to hear her operations were done quickly and that she's home already. But you're right -- she needs to rest and take it easy. Just because she's a med student doesn't mean she's Superwoman.

  9. Ugh, how can doctors still mess up nowadays? That's supposed to be a thing of that past. ):

  10. I'm glad to read that Theresa is alright man, hopefully she gets better soon, that really isn't good that it was complicated but at least things look like they're on the mend, try to get her to rest though and save her any more pain or anything like that!

  11. Wow and we put our lives in the hands of these idiots? geez, hate doctors up here, they make you wait and then find a way to screw it up when you finaly get in. Glad all worked out though.

  13. Poor Theresa! It sounds so painful.

  14. I wish her safe recovery. It does not have to be speedy because certain people want to be up and running in spite of the doctor's instructions.

  15. So it's basically like my country: Cheap healthcare and unending wait lines

  16. Poor Theresa! She sounds like one tough lady! I hope you guys managed to get through your couples' conflict all right. :) These types of events have a tendency to put things in perspective!

  20. Wow. First off, I'm really glad that she's ok. That just sounds like a really awful bit to go through, for both of you. Secondly, power to her for being willing to try and push back into it, but having been through multiple surgeries and being as hard-headed as a bit of brick, I recommend she listen to her doctor's and take it easy. That recovery period will make life easier in the long run so she doesn't deal with scar tissue spasms and all that good stuff.

    Best of luck to ya.

  25. Glad to hear Theresa's out of the hospital - and already back at her studies - most impressive! Undergoing 2 surgeries back to back would take a lot out of anyone.

  26. Good to hear Theresa is out of the hospital. It sounds like she works herself too hard though, being she started studying again right away instead of resting.

  28. I'm glad Theresa's fine now. I find it amusing how you related her hospitalization ha ha

As with doctors, no offense but they're not my fave people -that is based from personal experience :(

  29. I'm happy to hear that she's out of the hospital and okay. Also, yes, damn those genetic predispositions. Kidney stones run in my family, which means that if I don't watch how much salt I eat, I could be firing a spiky crystal shard through my pee hole. So... I don't eat a lot of salt.

  30. Yes, yes best of luck and a speedy recovery! Gads, I wonder if all that is scarier because she is a med student?

  31. So happy to hear Theresa is OK now. Not fun. My mom had hers out too about 10 years back as it ruptured. It was a no biggy even in her mid 60s at the time. Theresa will recover in no time.

  32. Down here in Tejas we also have ridiculously long waits for elective surgery; that is if you're one of the multitudes that are currently uninsured--as am I. I'm actually scheduled to have hand surgery in just two weeks now. It's only taken 6 months to get an appt.

I hope she bounces back soon. Pls tell her not to overdo too soon.

  33. I hope she recovers soon!
She must be pretty amazing to come out of hospital and start studying straight away - I take my hat off to her.

    All the bestness

I'm sorry , i mean no offense. in fact, i salute your girlfriend for being so calm and brave. i didn't even know how she reacted upon her new found disease but from what I read, she didn't tell you even when she got into emergency room several times when you guys were in a cold war? Wow, i definitely need to learn from her.
and derp, take care of her while she recovers.
